Halliburton(s) founder and songwriter Nathan Berg is the former bassist with Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau, a veteran of two world tours, and featured soloist on Maynard Ferguson: Live from London (Avenue Jazz) recorded at Ronnie Scott's Club in London, one of the premier jazz venues in the world. At age 15, Berg attended the music program at University of North Texas (of Norah Jones fame) before moving to New York City and performing with jazz greats John Scofield, Clark Terry, Terrance Blanchard, Stephen Scott and JJ Johnson. Berg also backed show biz legends Steve Allen, Shirley Jones and Bernadette Peters.

At age 17, Berg debuted as a leader and composer, signing with Time Is Records and releasing Fish With No Fins, cited in the Penguin Guide to Jazz (1992). Critic Leonard Feather wrote, “18-year old wunderkind Nathan Berg is a bass phenomenon.” In a rave review of a Clark Terry date in New York, critic Ira Gitler lauded the then 17-year-old bassist's virtuosity “with no excuse for age.” The Hollywood Reporter extolled Berg's “fresh-sounding solos” for Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau band, while the International Musician entitled an article about the rapidly-rising player, “Youth Jazz Prodigy!” A feature appeared in Bass Player Magazine , and Berg's composition and solo recordings received overwhelmingly positive reviews in major newspapers around Europe and the U.S.

Surprising those who had followed his rise in the jazz world, Berg turned his attention to rock music. In 1992 he returned to his hometown of Lawrence, Kansas and founded a Frank Zappa inspired rock band, Fang O'Love. One critic likened Berg's satirical lyrics and on-stage theatrics to “modern day H.L Mencken performance art.” The band quickly established a loyal following and performed throughout the early 1990s to enthusiastic college audiences around the Midwest.

At the same time as pursuing a successful career in jazz and rock music, Berg has also maintained a career in academia, graduating with a PhD in Economics. He is the recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship and a $60,000 Smith Richardson research grant. He is currently a faculty member at the University of Texas, Dallas where his students delight in the professor who “sings politics, lectures economics”.

Currently, Berg lives in Dallas Texas, where he performs with his latest band Halliburton(s), which will release a new CD later this year.
